This little place, in hands of the Quimet family for more than 100 years, is not only the oldest tapas bar in Barcelona, but probably also the best.
I always tell my friends or family members when I take them there, that after they have experienced this place, they will not be easily impressed by any other tapas bar. They will compare to the quality of food that has been served at Quimet i Quimet and also the atmosphere.
What’s so special about the place?
In an article of The Guardian they wrote “So good, they named it twice”, however the name is Quimet i Quimet because the bodega is run by brother and sister from the family Quimet. You will be able to meet both of them since they are the heart and the soul of the place! When they open their doors, a crowd of people is waiting impatiently to get into the tiny place full of bottles and delicacies from around the world. One thing is for sure: in this place you will only find QUALITY.
The place fills fast and you might get anxious on how they are going to take your order – don’t worry, you are in the hand of professionals! 3 persons behind the counter will be in control of the crowd. They will make eye contact with you and ask you what you want to drink. If it is your first time to have tapas, you might not even know what to order! The menu contains “montaditos” which is basically toasted bread with any kind of spread or topping you can imagine. The special thing about Quimet i Quimet is that they create combinations of food which will surprise you in their taste!
As soon as you ordered (in case even the menu is overwhelming you, ask them to decide for you, nobody knows their food better than them), keep an eye on the employees. Now they will start to prepare the delicious food in front of you. Every movement is fast and you will be amazed by how they learned to work in such a small environment! Although they are extremely busy, they are hospitable and friendly.
The bodega has shorter opening hours than other tapas bars. They only open Mondays to Fridays, from 12 PM to 4 PM and 7 PM to 10:30 PM. Saturdays from 12 PM to 4 PM and SUNDAYS CLOSED. (cannot guarantee you accuracy of opening hours, take it as a guideline since times could change).
How to get there
It is located in Poeta Cabanyes, number 25 The closest Metro station is Paral.lel. Metro lines L2 (purple line) and L3 (green line) stop there.
I usually order a Vermouth to drink. The have EZAGUIRRE and you will be able to add some soda from a “back in the days” soda bottle 😉 If you don’t like Vermouth or are not sure if you want to try it, order a glass of cava (Catalan sparkling wine). Try the cheese platter and choose at least 2 or 3 montaditos from the menu. You will have to come back and try for more, for sure! BUEN PROVECHO (enjoy your meal).
